Highlights of Day Two of the Ministerial Meetings and Side Events

Nairobi, 7/12/2019/ACP: In a long and intense day of discussions, ACP Ministers at the 110th Session of the Council of Ministers in Nairobi, Kenya debated issues related to the future of the organisation.

Secretary General Designate

The Secretary General(SG) Designate for the period 2020-2025 has been named. H.E. Mr. Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti of Angola will take over the office of the Secretary General of the ACP Group of States from 1 March 2020. The Council thanked the other two very strong candidates for the post and praised the current SG, H.E. Dr. Patrick I. Gomes, for his leadership to the organisation to date.

Ministerial Meetings

At the Opening Ceremony of the 110th Session of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Gomes broached the major issues to be addressed during the meeting, such as the changes to the ACP’s Constitutive Act, the Georgetown Agreement, the ongoing Post-Cotonou negotiations: “As an international organisation and the most unique, inter-governmental body, with Observer status at the UN since 1986, it is proposed that we shall have a more formal designation and be known as the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).”

The SG also seized the opportunity to express his deep gratitude to his colleagues, with whom he “had the honour and privilege to work, at this and previous sessions of Council.”

Business ACP

The Business ACP Summit continued the series of workshops and culminated in the evening with a fashion show that highlighted the work of 80 designers from 12 countries.
