Bonn, 17 May 2017/ ACP: The ACP Secretariat is organizing, in partnership with the African Union Commission, a side event in the margins of the Bonn climate Change Conference 8-18 May, which includes the forty-sixth session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 46) and Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 46) as well as the third part of the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1-3), taking place in Bonn, Germany.

The African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States is one of the largest groups of developing countries in the world consisting of 79 Member States of which 37 are Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and 39 Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The adverse impacts of climate pose the greatest challenge to the sustainable livelihoods, security and well-being of people and the ecosystems on which they depend. Climate change exacerbates already existing hazards.
Scientific evidence indicates that countries such as Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries and landlocked countries will become increasingly more vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change such as sea-level rise and storm surges, floods, droughts and extreme weather events, coral bleaching, coastal erosion and changing precipitation patters.
People become vulnerable when they are exposed to hazards and do not have the necessary resources and means to resist, accommodate or recover from the hazard. Thus, responding to climate change would require adequate financial resources, technological development and transfer, and political will, among others, to build resilience and adaptive capacity, as well as foster low carbon, resilient investments.
Encouraged by the early entry into force of the Paris Agreement on 4th November 2016, and the Presidency of COP 23 by an ACP Country, Fiji, the side event will seek to contribute to keeping the momentum and cohesiveness set in Paris at COP 21, with a focus on implementing the Paris Agreement.
Under the theme "Vulnerability in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries: Adaptation, Capacity, People (ACP)", the meeting aims to provide a platform for outreach and advocacy in support of implementing the Paris Agreement, strengthen negotiation aspects and facilitate dialogue and exchange of ideas among vulnerable ACP Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries, landlocked countries and coastal countries.

The event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 17th May, 2017 at 13h15-14h45 in Bonn, Germany (Conference venue Bonn 181).
